The Siding Project

This siding was installed by:

After the meeting in May, that the first General Contractor, William Matzker,  had arranged, and where I first met with Tim Rion about the siding,  that first General Contractor, Mr. Matzker, had quit.

I had no reason to think that Mr. Matzker’s quitting would in any way affect Mr. Rion’s work on doing the siding, so I was looking forward to getting that done. I really liked the siding color we had picked and how well it matched the brick, so I was eager to see it all come together.

Mr. Rion had told me he would call and let me know when he had me scheduled. … That never happened.

I woke up one morning about 9:00 to the sound of voices coming from the new house. I was surprised, as no one was scheduled to be there that day. When I looked out the window, I saw Mr. Rion standing in the yard at the new house, talking to another man. I was surprised, as he had told me he would call and let me know when they were coming.

I got dressed, went out into the garage, hit the garage door opener, put on my yard shoes, and started out. As the garage door went up, I saw Mr. Rion go to his truck, get in, and start driving away. I thought that was strange, as I figured he had surely heard the garage door go up and knew I was coming out. .. Anyway, as he drove past the end of my driveway, I wasn’t more than 30′ away from him. I raised my hand to wave at him and he never even looked my direction.

When I got over to the new house and went to introduce myself to the siding crew, I was taken aback by how “rough” this group looked. Three of the four men had mouths full of rotten teeth. My first though was:”Oh my goodness!”

Below are photos of the siding they put up.

Here is a video of their defective siding later being taken down.

The crew who took the siding off told me that it was nailed on with shorter

than average nails and none of them seemed to be driven into the studs.

Problem 1

Proper siding installation requires the Vinyl Siding to overlap the Wooden Sill Plate by 1-1 1/2″. This photo shows the sill plate obviously NOT covered by the siding. This exposes the wood to rain and snow, and will definitely cause deterioration of the wood.

Problem 2

The staining on the concrete foundation wall appears to shows that rain/water has been penetrating the sill plate (and possibly the sub-floor) and then leaching out and running down the foundation wall.

Problem 3

Shows a large gap in a trim piece (J Mold) which would allow water to enter and seep down behind the siding, encouraging wood deterioration and mold growth.

Problem 4

Shows a piece of siding which had not been properly attached to the house.  This siding piece had no nails in it and it was easily moved back and forth by touch.

Problem 5

Shows Fascia Covering Metal which had not been properly attached to the house. IE: Not enough nails in it to hold it in proper position.

Problem 6

Bad Gutter Installation – The gutter Mr. Rion installed on my house. On this gutter, the joints are weak and likely to collapse under a heavy snow.

A correctly constructed gutter.
